Their baptisms did not survive and I am not certain if they had the same mother. (yDNA evidence is conclusive for a recent common paternal ancestor.)

Among the mourners listed in the Southern Star on May 9, 1903 at Jeremiah's funeral who were called "cousins" were:

Jeremiah Herlihy, Tooreen; Michael Herlihy, Cloonkeen; Denis Herlihy, do

Michael Herlihy died on November 10, 1903. He had been a National Teacher. He had been living in Knockaneagh with his family. His wife Kate Hurley had predeceased him in death the prior year. According to the Southern Star on November 21, 1903, the mourners at his funeral were:

...John and Thos Herlihy (brothers), Mrs. Leahy (sister), Ds. C., Daniel J., and Patrick J. Herlihy (sons), Denis, Daniel, and Jeremiah Herlihy, Ds. and Dan Leahy (nephews), Mary, Kate, and Hannah Herlihy, Maggie and Jane Leahy (nieces), William and Jerh. Herlihy, Lawrence, Jeremiah, and John Collins (cousins). Daniel and Jeremiah Hurley (brothers-in-law), Mrs. Young, Mrs Dineen, T Dineen (cousins)...

The Collinses listed were likely sons of the aforementioned Jeremiah Collins and another brother, John Collins. The John Collins listed was probably the one who had purchased a farm in Smorane in 1896 and lived there at the time of the funeral. (John married Elsie Roberts in 1909 and went back to Adrigool.)

Michael Herlihy's wife was Kate Hurley (1855 - 1902) of Coolnagarrane. Her parents were Daniel Hurley and Honora McCarthy, the latter a Sowney from Driminidy, her mother a Donovan. Kate's sister Ellen (1852 - 1930) married William Young of North Street, Skibbereen, in 1875, so Ellen is probably the Mrs. Young mentioned among his mourners. Another Hurley sister, Mary (1851 - 1935), married Timothy Dineen of Shreelane in 1874. That might explain the Dineens listed among the mourners, but if they are the right ones, it doesn't explain why they, and Mrs. Young, were not also listed as in-laws.

Michael Herlihy's ancestral family was from Cloonkeen. The parents were Denis Herlihy and Mary Regan, who married February 8, 1834 in Kilmacabea & Kilfaughnabeg parish. Witnesses were Cornelius Cahalane and Patrick Herlihy. The family records are Kilmacabea & Kilfaughnabeg R.C. Parish.

Son Patrick, baptized April 12, 1835, married Eliza (Bess) Brien of Ballyvireen on February 25, 1879.

Son Daniel was baptized August 9, 1840.

Son Denis was baptized December 14, 1842.

Daughter Johanna may have been baptized May 1844. She married Denis Leahy of Dromcorragh, Caheragh on Feb 18, 1875.

There may have been a daughter Catherine, baptized April 19, 1846. The mother is written as Cath, not Mary.

Son Michael was baptized April 13, 1851. He married Kate Hurley on May 7, 1886.

Son William was baptized April 18, 1853. He never married, and went to live at the Leahy residence in Dromcorragh.

Son Thomas was baptized April 7, 1855. He married Hannah Williamson of Knockskagh on February 2, 1895.

Thomas's twin John, also baptized April 7, 1855, married another Mary Regan on November 24, 1904.

The Collins obituary also mentions as a cousin Jeremiah Herlihy (1841 - 1908) of Tooreen. This is probably Tooreennasillane. The record of the marriage of this Jeremiah Herlihy to Johanna McCarthy on February 23, 1873 states his father was Denis. However, he does not seem to be from the Herlihy-Regan family of Cloonkeen. Maybe he was the son of Denis Herlihy and Mary Long in Skibbereen parish.

Other Herlihy obituaries tie the Herlihy-Regan family of Cloonkeen with the family of Patrick Herlihy and Mary Long (a different Mary Long) of Cloonkeen.

The records I was able to locate:

Son James, baptized July 7, 1834.

Son Daniel, baptized April 5, 1836. Married Hannah Donoghue on February 8, 1870. They lived in Milleenawillin and Derrylugga. Daniel died in November of 1914 (unable to find a death record).

Son William, baptized September 23, 1838.

Daughter Kate, baptized December 8, 1839. Married Denis Sullivan possibly August 7, 1863 in Cork South Parish. Kate died July 4, 1921.

Possibly a son Thomas, baptized around 1842. Unable to support with a baptism record. Married Ellen Carey on February 25, 1873.

Son Pat, baptized May 23, 1845.

Pat's twin Johanna, baptized May 23, 1845. Married Florence O'Driscoll on February 7, 1882 and lived in Kilsarlaght, Aghadown.

The November 28, 1914 Southern Star obituary of Daniel Herlihy of Milleenawillin, who died aged 79, mentions Mrs. O'Sullivan and Mrs. O'Driscoll (sisters). The details:

...The chief mourners were: Patrick, William, Thomas and Daniel (sons); Hannah and Julia (daughters); Mrs. O'Driscoll and Mrs. O'Sullivan (sisters); Florence O'Driscoll (brother-in-law); Denis and John, Stephen and Daniel O'Sullivan (nephews); John and Thomas Herlihy, Knockskagh; Thomas Herlihy, Smorane; Michael Herlihy, do; Mrs. J. McCarthy, Leap; Mrs. Cullinane, Leap; John McClean, Drisheen; Michael Harrington, North Street; Mrs. Nagle, do; Daniel M. Howard, Waterford; Mrs. O'Driscoll, Moultrahane; Mrs. Walsh, Derryleigh;, R. Long, do., etc. (cousins).

Daniel Herlihy was noted as a victim in the Land Wars.

The July 16, 1921 Skibbereen Eagle obituary of Catherine Herlihy Sullivan confirms her relationship to the same people.

These Herlihys appear to have also had a relationship to Cornelius Cahalane and Catherine Herlihy of Cloonkeen. I don't if Catherine Herlihy was a sister to Patrick (1800) and Denis (1808).

To double and triple check, I examined the obituaries of Mary Hourihane Collins (1837 - 1922), widow of Jeremiah, and also Catherine Sheily Collins (1833 - 1905), widow of John. There are no mention of Herlihy, Regan, Long, etc.

How the Adrigool Collinses and the Herlihys were related, if they were, remain a mystery. The Collinses were born decades before 1842, likely in Castlehaven & Myross, so their baptism records did not survive. The marriage records of these Collinses and the baptism records of their children do not show a single witness named Herlihy, Regan or Long. Available records for these Herlihys in the later generations have shown a few Collinses, but there are no obvious relationships to Adrigool Collinses.

Patrick Herlihy (1800? - 1875?) and Denis Herlihy (1808 - 1887) are modeled as brothers in the family tree below until more information is made available.

Descendants from the Sullivans of Myross were among the mourners at Johanna's funeral, listed as "cousins."

These Myross Sullivans were partially documented in prior posts here and here. However, the ancestral family, that of Daniel Sullivan and Margaret Keohane of Myross, along with their descendant branches, have not been presented comprehensively.

... Mrs. Pat Nyhane, Rosscarbery; Miss Eileen Barry, do.; Miss Francis Barry, Dungannon; Edmund Barry, do; Miss Maggie Daly, Froe ...

Mrs. Patrick Nyhan was Mary Agnes Barry (16 Jun 1880), who married Patrick Nyhane on October 28, 1913. Their family lived in Rosscarbery. Mary Agnes was the daughter of James Barry and Eliza Sullivan. Their family also lived in Rosscarbery.

Miss Eileen Barry (01 Dec 1892) was a sister to Mary Agnes.

Miss Frances Barry (b.c. 1887) married Patrick Fitzpatrick of Barley Hill on February 11, 1926. (I have not found her birth record.) Frances was the daughter of John Barry and Anne Sullivanl. Their family lived in Benduff.

Edmund Barry (10 Apr 1877) was a brother to Frances.

Miss Maggie Daly of Froe (17 Jan 1895) was the daughter of James Daly and Maria Barry. Maggie Ann married Timothy Lalor of Ardagh, Rosscarbery, on March 4, 1919. Maria Barry is believed to have been the daughter of John Barry and Anne Sullivan, born 02 Mar 1871. Maggie's parents married around 1893. I have not yet located the Daly-Barry marriage in civil registration.

Among the siblings of Anne and Eliza Sullivan was an older brother Thomas (1834 - 1918). His birth and baptism would have preceded the available Castlehaven & Myross R.C. records. He is a focus of investigation, because, of the all the known church events of the known children of Laurence Collins of Adrigool (1783 - 1867), the name Thomas Sullivan appears five times:

As a witness to the marriage of John Young of Derryclogh and Mary Collins of Adrigool, 30 Dec 1855.

As the godfather of Laurence Collins of Adrigool, 13 Sep 1857. Parents Jeremiah Collins and Mary Hourihane.

As the godfather of Nancy Sullivan, baptized 30 Sep 1860 in Castlehaven (probably different Sullivans). Nancy's mother was Catherine Collins, likely a daughter to Laurence.

As the godfather of Catherine Collins of Adrigool, 13 Oct 1861. Parents Jeremiah Collins and Mary Hourihane.

As the godfather of John Collins of Adrigool, 29 Dec 1864. Parents John Collins and Catherine Sheily.

There *might* be some Collins reciprocity among the Myross Sullivan records. There isn't much, possibly because many of the interactions would have occurred in Castlehaven & Myross prior to 1842, for which the records did not survive. For now, I am assuming it is one Thomas Sullivan and that it is the Thomas Sullivan from Myross. This may not necessarily be the case !

I've been researching this family for a while, because (I believe) one of the children of Cornelius Collins and his wife Annie Collins was a friend of my mother's family. I've asked my aunt if "Cyril" was a relative but nobody knows. The research is complicated and muddy as Cornelius and Annie were a Collins-Collins marriage. In addition, the purported "cousins" listed as mourners in Cornelius's 1920 obituary look more like they were from Annie's family. I do not know if Cornelius and Annie were blood relatives.

Cornelius and Annie married March 2, 1897 in Skibbereen. They had the following children:

Denis Joseph, born January 30, 1898. Daniel Collins, grandfather, PAB.

Ellen (Lilly?), born August 23, 1900. Married a man named Hourihane in Tooreen.

Daniel Aloysius, born June 20, 1902. Died June 11, 1962, single, at his Hourihane brother-in-law's residence.

Bridget, born June 20, 1902.

Cornelius, born October 10, 1903. He was known as Cyril and was our family friend. He died in 1985 in Clonakilty, single. His obit says he was "...survived by brother-in-law, cousins, and other relatives..."

Cornelius Senior died on May 1, 1920. Since the obituary of Cornelius appears to list as "cousins" people from both his and Annie's families, Annie's family information is listed below. We'll start with her.

More about Annie

If the research is correct, Annie was born January 17, 1866, the only child of Daniel Collins and Mary Neill of Derrylugga. Her godparents were Patrick Neill and Anne Collins.

Daniel Collins and Mary Neill married February 28, 1865. Witnesses were John Hourihane and Patrick Neill.

Annie's Collins ancestry and relatives

Annie's father Daniel's parents were likely Daniel Collins (whom I'll call Senior) and Ann (Nancy) Regan. They probably married in Skibbereen about or before 1833. Known children included:

Mary, baptized October 27, 1833. Godparents Daniel Burke and Ellen Hourihane.

James, baptized April 12, 1835. Godparents Peter Collins and Mary Keating.

Anne, baptized August 4, 1842. Godparents John Riordan and Mary Regan. It is believed she married Daniel Crowley on February 11, 1871 in Skibbereen. She could have been Annie's godmother.

Andrew, baptized February 4, 1844. Godparents James Collins and Bridget Collins. This Andrew possibly died shortly after birth, because of another child named Andrew.

Andrew, baptized, April 23, 1846. Godparents Thomas Hayes and Catherine Deasy. Andrew was well-known in town. He was a Clerk of the Petty Sessions (CPS). He married Elizabeth ("Bessie") Davis on April 29, 1871. Bessie died May 27, 1906. Andrew died January 18, 1931.

Andrew and Bessie had a number of children, among them:

Patrick James ("PJ"), baptized April 14, 1872. Godparents Michael Collins and Mary Canty. PJ became a prominent, well-known solicitor. He died, unmarried, at age 43, in 1915. The local papers carried extensive listings of the attendees of PJ's funeral, a lot of them named Collins.

There are family trees on Ancestry that claim that Patrick came to America and sired a family. Obviously, I think these are incorrect.

Margaret Mary, baptized October 23, 1873. Godparents Robert McCarthy and Lucy Davis.

Ann, baptized Oct 10, 1874. Godparents Daniel Collins and Eliza Canty.

Daniel, baptized December 25, 1875. Godparents Bridget Kennedy and Daniel Collins.

The Skibbereen records are very difficult to read in the 1830's. Notice that Annie's father Daniel's own baptism is absent from the children listed for Daniel Collins and Anne Regan. So besides him there could have been more children, including a brother Michael.

Daniel's brother Michael married one Mary Burke about 1889, but so far a marriage record has not been located. They lived in Drummig. They had the following known children:

Anne, born April 4, 1890.

Mary, born May 11, 1891. She may have been known as Mollie.

Daniel, born December 1, 1892.

Michael died January 31, 1895. Daniel Collins of Derrylugga, brother, was present at death (PAD). Michael was only 53.

Mary Burke Collins, the widow, was in Drummig in the 1901 census with her children, a relative and a servant. Mary remarried, to James Walsh, on February 11, 1902, but was widowed again by the 1911 census.

Michael's son Daniel married one Julia Daly from Dromillihy, according to Julia's Southern Star obituary from January 24, 1959. Daniel's obituary is dated June 5, 1978 and mentions one daughter.

Annie's Neill ancestry and relatives

Mary O'Neill Collins, Annie's mother, was living with the Collins family in Derrylugga in the 1901 census. She was aged 69.

Mary died December 20, 1909. According to the death record, she was 83. That would make her year of birth roughly between 1826 and 1832. If this is accurate, she could have been anywhere from 33 to 39 when she and Daniel Collins married in 1865.

According to the Collins-Neill 1865 marriage record, her father was Phil, and she was residing in Rearahinagh. This townland happens to be split between two parishes, Caheragh and Dromdaleague. It is believed they lived on the Caheragh side.

There wasn't anybody named Neill (or O'Neil, or Neal) listed in Rearahinagh in the Tithe Applotment books, nor in the Tenure Book, which appears to have been enumerated on January 25, 1850. However, people named Neal were listed in the House books dated later that year and in 1854 - Catherine Neal and Patrick Neal. They are also listed in Griffith's Valuation, in the Caheragh side of the townland.

A Catherine Neill, aged 78, died on November 26, 1873 in Derrylugga. Catherine would have been born around 1795. Daniel Collins was PAD.

Was this Mary's mother?

To make a long story shorter, the best fit I can find for Mary's nuclear family is:

Phil Neill and Catherine McCarthy
no surviving marriage record

Mary, baptized January 13, 1834 in SKIBBEREEN. Godparents John Peard, Sarah? Peard.

Bridget, baptized February 4, 1837 in SKIBBEREEN. Godparents Michael Pierce?, Peg Sullivan.

Cornelius, baptized January 18, 1840 in CAHERAGH. Residence Bauravilla. Godparents John Tobin, Catherine Tobin.

Catherine, baptized November 12, 1842 in CAHERAGH. Residence Bauravilla. Godparents John Hourihane, Jane Donovan.

Michael, baptized September 30, 1848 in SKIBBEREEN. Godparents John McCarthy, Honora Burke. This would be a bit of a stretch if Catherine McCarthy was born about 1795.

There were also a Patrick Neill, in Rearahinagh, married to Honora McCarthy. (Her name might have been mistakenly written as Margaret in one record). Patrick's parentage at this point has not been researched. Patrick and Honora's known children start appearing in the baptismal records in 1859.

There were also a Jeremiah Neill, in Rearahinagh, whose father was Phil, and who married Hannah Collins of Coornishal on January 26, 1864. Witnesses Cornelius McCarthy, Hannah Neill. (Although I cannot unequivocally prove it, I think Hannah Collins had an older sister Mary who married Cornelius McCarthy of Lissane Upper. So Cornelius McCarthy was her brother-in-law. That's an entirely separate genealogy rabbit hole.)

Obviously I cannot make further dents in Phil Neill, and I have no real ancestral data on Catherine McCarthy.

This pretty much exhausts what I've been able to scrape up on the ancestry of Annie. Much of it remains unproven. Now on to Cornelius.

More about Cornelius

As previously stated, Cornelius died May 1, 1920. He was 63. Anne Collins widow PAD.

The 1897 marriage record lists his residence as Cunnicawn. This is Knockane. Apparently he went to live at Annie's Derrylugga residence.

The marriage record also says his father was named Denis.

The 1911 Derrylugga census shows that Cornelius had two nephews, Michael Hourihane and James Hourihane, staying with the Collinses.

It looks like those same nephews were in Knockane in 1901, the children of Michael Hourihane and Mary Collins. So far, I have not found that marriage record.

The known Hourihane children:

Patrick, born May 19, 1886. Julia Collins, PAB.

John, born June 1, 1888.

Cornelius, born Jun 21, 1889.

Annie, born October 27, 1890.

Michael, born January 21, 1892.

Timothy, born March 25, 1893.

James, born July 21, 1894.

Kate, born May 20, 1896.

Ellen, born July 26, 1897.

Mary Collins Hourihane died 27 Mar 1905, aged 48. She was 42 in the 1901 census. So her Year of Birth was somewhere around 1857 - 1859.

At this point I proceeded on the assumption that Cornelius and Mary were siblings. From Cornelius's obituary, they also had sisters Ellen and Julia. By the 1897 marriage record, I am also assuming their father was named Denis.

There is a death record of a Denis Collins of Knockane, aged 70, dated February 22, 1896, with Cornelius Collins PAD. So this Denis was born about 1826.

With this information, I found the family of a Denis Collins and Jane McCarthy in Rearahinagh:

Ellen, baptized October 17, 1852. Godparents Andy McCarthy and Mary Donovan.

Mary, baptized March 17, 1854. Godparents Pat Neill, Mary Donovan.

Cornelius, baptized January 31, 1856. Godparents Cornelius McCarthy, Nancy Skuse.

Bridget, baptized January 31, 1856. Godparents William Young, Jane Young.

Julia, baptized September 29, 1857. Godparents Andrew McCarthy, Ellen McCarthy.

There is an 1834 marriage of a Denis Collins and Jane McCarthy, but based on the baptisms above I don't think this is the correct marriage.

I think the correct marriage mistakenly indexes the bride as Rose rather than Jane. It occurred November 1, 1851. The bride's residence was Rearahinagh. Witnesses look like Robert Young and Ellen Young.

And there is a death record of a Jane Collins of Knockane, November 13, 1896, with Cornelius Collins son of deceased PAD. She was 72. If this was correct, that would put her Year of Birth about 1824.

Now I've hit the brick walls. There is not one Collins name among the witnesses for this family's church events. So there aren't any real hints for the nuclear family of Denis Collins.

There is some evidence that Jane McCarthy was somehow linked to the McCarthy Sowney family of Rearahinagh. Andrew McCarthy(1815-1897) of Rearahinagh was likely the son of Timothy McCarthy of Driminidy, and probably Catherine Donovan. Andrew's baptism predates available records. I can only speculate here, and further speculate that perhaps Jane was a sibling.

The best thing I can do next is look close to home (Rearahinagh) and at the obituary of Cornelius.

The Obituary

The obituary of May 15, 1920 states:

The chief mourners were - Mrs. Collins (wife); Denis, Dan and Cyril (sons); Lily and Birdie (daughters); Ellen and Julia (sisters); C. Hourihane (nephew); Andrew Collins C.P.S., Skibbereen; John Collins, Drominidy; Mrs. and the Misses O'Donovan, Skibbereen; Michael and Mrs. Collins, do; Dan and Mollie Collins, Dromig; Jerh. O'Neill, Mary O'Neill, Patk. and Mrs. Collins. J. Collins. Adrigole; D. Collins, do; J. and T. Collins, Coornishal; J. Clancy, Bauravilla; Peadar O'Hourihane Skibbereen; Miss O'Hourihane do; T. Crowley Hollybrook; D. Crowley, Bauravilla; Mrs. Young, North Street, Skibbereen (cousins).

The relationships to Cornelius are more obvious here: Mrs. Collins (wife); Denis, Dan and Cyril (sons); Lily and Birdie (daughters); Ellen and Julia (sisters); C. Hourihane (nephew).

These look more like Annie's relatives: Andrew Collins C.P.S., Dan and Mollie Collins, Dromig.

Mrs. Young, North Street, Skibbereen was Ellen Hurley Young, widow of William Young, and daughter of Daniel Hurley(1809-1879) and Honora McCarthy(1819-1891) of Coolnagarrane. Honora was the daughter of the aforementioned Timothy McCarthy and Catherine Donovan of Driminidy.

T. Crowley Hollybrook; D. Crowley, Bauravilla. I can't explain these relationships. There were a Patrick Crowley and Catherine McCarthy of Bauravilla, the latter from the aforementioned family of Timothy McCarthy and Catherine Donovan of Driminidy. But I don't think these Crowleys are from that family.

John Collins, Drominidy. This one has me stumped. If this John is the son of Timothy Collins, then John, who was the product of a Collins-Collins marriage, was my grandfather's first cousin. John's mother was Kate Collins of Lissane Lower (1860-1889). John's father Timothy was the son of a John Collins of Driminidy. Timothy's mother may have been an Ellen Collins.

J. Clancy, Bauravilla. This might have been Joseph Clancy, son of Patrick Clancy and Ellen Barry (m. 1895). Patrick in turn was probably the son of Joseph Clancy and Elizabeth Keeffe. A relationship to Cornelius Collins is not obvious. I am not sure of Ellen Barry's ancestry.

Peadar O'Hourihane Skibbereen; Miss O'Hourihane do. Joseph Clancy and Eliza Keeffe knew the Bauravilla Hourihanes. A relationship to Cornelius Collins is not obvious. I am at a loss here.

J. Collins. Adrigole; D. Collins, do."D" might have been Dan Collins, married to Ellen Whooley. His father was named Timothy. His mother might have been Catherine Hegarty, but I really don't have information here. "J" might have been John or Jeremiah Collins. John and Jeremiah were known to be my grandmother's relatives.

J. and T. Collins, Coornishal. I'm guessing these were probably Tim and John Collins. Their parents were John Collins and Johanna (Hannah) Cahalane. John Senior's parents are believed to have been Denis Collins and Johanna Hourihane.

There were a number of Collins families in Coornishal. The relationship to either Cornelius or Annie is not obvious.

Jerh. O'Neill, Mary O'Neil. These look like Annie's relatives. Or were they? Recall that out of one of the Coornishal Collins families, one Hannah Collins (also went by Norry or Johanna) married Jeremiah Neill of Rearahinagh on January 26, 1864. Jeremiah's father was Philip Neil. So there was a relationship to Annie.

The children of Jeremiah Neill and Hannah Collins were:

Philip, baptized November 23, 1864. Godparents Pat Neill, Bridget Collins. Died in infancy.

Mary, baptized November 22, 1866. Godmother Mary McCarthy.

Patrick, baptized March 5, 1869. Godparents Patrick Donovan, Honora McCarthy. He subsequently married Elizabeth Croston on March 5, 1905.

Jeremiah, baptized March 27, 1871. Godparents Cornelius McCarthy, Johanna Collins.

Even now, I cannot tell which Neills the obituary references.

Working on the theory that Hannah was the daughter of John Collins and Joan (or Johanna) Crowley, John and Joan married March 2, 1824 in Drimoleague & Drinagh. Then there was a gap in children's births, because any baptisms in Kilmacabea & Kilfaughnabeg before 1832 did not survive. Recall my earlier speculation that there was an early daughter Mary who married Cornelius McCarthy of Lissane Upper. If Hannah was a younger sister to Mary, the godfather of her son Jeremiah could have been her brother-in-law.

So many burning questions!

Could Denis, the father of Cornelius Collins, have been from any of the Coornishal Collins families? John Collins and Johanna Crowley did have a son, Denis, in 1846, so maybe our Denis, father of Cornlius, was from a related family.

Could Jane McCarthy been the daughter of Timothy McCarthy of Driminidy, and possibly Catherine Donovan, having been born before the start of Drimoleague & Drinagh records?

Could the Rearahinagh O'Neils been related to the ones in Trawlebane? This one is of significance to me, since I have DNA triangulation evidence between my aunt and uncle and two people descended from Trawlebane O'Neils. The matches with Trawlebane O'Neil ancestry are descended from the parents of Captain Francis O'Neil. Yes, that Captain O'Neil, whose statue is in Trawlebane.

Where was Phil Neil's wife, Catherine McCarthy, from?

Were Cornelius Collins and Annie Collins distant cousins?

And the big one - was Cyril Collins and either or both of his parents related to my family?

Cyril is in the picture below the right red arrow. The original was cropped from a larger photo of my mother's family. The man below the left red arrow is an unknown.

That post suggested that Catherine was the daughter of Humphrey Collins of Lower Lissane and Johanna Barnane. Johanna was probably from Drinagh.

The known Donovan family consisted of six daughters and one son. So far, I have not been able to follow up on daughters Julia, Johanna, and Catherine and son Cornelius. Some information has been found about the remaining daughters.

The Bohanes of Killadery

Mary Donovan of Lissalohorig (b 1852) married John Bohane 26 Feb 1884. In addition to Killaderry, Castlehaven, it appears the family spent some time in Callaros Oughter, Goleen. Among their known children were:

Jeremiah (1885), born in Killaderry.

Patrick (about 1886, haven't found birth rec)

Norah, or Hanora (about 1887, haven't found birth rec)

Mary (1889), was born in Callaros Oughter.

The McCarthys of Mohanagh

Hanora Bohane (bc 1887) married John McCarthy 09 Feb 1922. The family lived in Mohanagh, Aghadown.

The McCarthys of Lissalohorig

Mary Bohane (1889) married Daniel McCarthy 13 Apr 1920. They were in Lissalohorig at the time. Their daughter Mary Philomena went on to marry Patrick Caverly of Cooranuller.

The Hegartys of Bluid West

Hanora Donovan of Lissalohorig (1855) married Daniel Hegarty of Bluid 10 Feb 1891.They had a son John (bc 1892, haven't found birth rec) and a daughter Maria (b 1895). This family was in the 1901 census.

By 1911, Daniel Hegarty was a widower.

Daughter Maria Hegarty married Denis McCarthy 24 Nov 1927. They may have lived in Angram and had a number of children, but this line of investigation has not yet been pursued.

The Lordans of Drishanebeg

Ellen Donovan of Lissalohorig (1864) married Cornelius Lordan of Drishanebeg 29 Jan 1898. As far as is known, they had one son, Patrick John, about 1901.
There is an organization devoted to preserving his memory, including the memorial in Trawlebane.

He was baptized Daniel on August 30, 1848, the youngest child of the family of John O'Neill and Catherine Mahony, who married in Caheragh on April 6, 1834. The Mahonys resided in Kealanine, near Castledonovan.

Catherine's father was known as Daniel O'Mahony Ciánagh Mór. The family were known for their love of music. (I think this is all documented in Captain Francis O'Neill's book on Irish Folk Music. Check the web and Google book archives.)

Catherine's mother was known only as Mary Mahony. I cannot tell if that was also her maiden name. Daniel and Mary both died about 1857. They were eventually interred in Enniskeane. I do not know if that is where these Mahonys were originally from.

The marriage record for Daniel and Mary as well as the baptism records of their children probably have not survived. I did a search for Mahonys as witnesses in the records of the Trawlebane O'Neill family, as well as other Mahonys out of Kealanine, wondering if perhaps they could have been relatives of Catherine.

A Daniel Mahony and a Mary Mahony witnessed the 1834 marriage of John O'Neill and Catherine Mahony.

John Mahony was godfather to Philip O'Neill on January 27, 1835.

Mary Mahony was godmother to Mary O'Neill on July 6, 1836.

Daniel Mahony was godfather to Michael O'Neill on January 15, 1841.

Ellen Mahony was godmother to Catherine O'Neill on September 19, 1843.

A John Mahony married Margaret Hourihane in Drimoleague & Drinagh on March 3, 1840, before witnesses Daniel Mahony and Pat Hourihane. They lived in Kealanine.

The children I could find are Daniel, January 19, 1841 with godparents Daniel Mahony and Mary Mahony; Mary, February 10, 1842, with godparents Daniel Mahony and Ellen Mahony; and Margaret, August 30, 1846, with godparents James McCarthy and Bess Hourihane.

A Norry Mahony from Kealanine married Tim Canty February 22, 1838, with witnesses Daniel Mahony and Tim Canty.

Tim Canty the bridegroom may have also gone by John. **If that is correct**, records show them in Dromasta and Kealanine, and the known children include Margaret Canty, October 28, 1843, godparents Jeremiah Canty and Mary Sweeney; Curly (Cornelius?) Canty, November 13, 1845, godparents Paddy Canty and Mary McCarthy; Ellen Canty, May 21, 1848, godparents Andrew McCarthy and Johanna Mahony; and John Canty, April 25, 1852, godparents Daniel Mahony and Honora Mahony.

A Johanna Mahony married Andrew McCarthy (Sowney) on February 12, 1839, witnesses Daniel Mahony and Mary McCarthy. (I might have Johanna's death record as February 7, 1907, putting her birth year about or before 1821.) Ellen Mahony was godmother to Charles McCarthy baptized September 11, 1840; Dan Mahony was godfather to Johanna McCarthy baptized February 3, 1850.

I have not yet found obvious marriage data for Mary (O'Neill godmother, 1836) or Ellen (O'Neill godmother, 1843).

The O'Mahonys in the ancestry of Captain Francis O'Neill have NOT been conclusively identified in this research expedition. But the data could be circumstantial evidence of a sibling relationship between Catherine Mahony O'Neill, John Mahony, Norry Mahony Canty, and Johanna Mahony McCarthy. There is also some encouraging genetic data from known descendants of Johanna Mahony McCarthy and Catherine Mahony O'Neill showing an excellent match (centiMorgans in the low triple digits). However, rural Ireland being what it is, these two DNA test takers appear to be related in multiple ways. Genetically isolating the Mahony relationship - if there is one - is just not possible with the data currently available.

There are other Mahonys who resided in Kealanine, but their records don't exhibit obvious familial ties to the aforementioned Mahonys. Much more evidence is needed to make a case for the family of Catherine Mahony O'Neill, but at least this is a start.
Witnesses were Michael Hurley and Daniel Hurley.

It is believed Michael and Daniel were Ellen's brothers. The extended family is being modeled on the assumption that Ellen was baptized January 22, 1815 and that her parents were John Hurley and Jane McCarthy. There are no baptism records to confirm the parentage of her assumed siblings.

The Sweeneys resided in Lakelands and Kilnaclasha. Their known children were:

Eugene bap. 01 Mar 1847, godparents Daniel Hurley and Mary Sweeney
Michael bap. 29 Apr 1849, godparents Michael Hurley and Catherine Sweeney
John bap. 12 Aug 1851, godparents James Barrett (Barnett?) and Catherine Sweeney
Daniel bap. 13 Aug 1854, godparents Daniel Hurley and Mary Sweeney
Ellen bap. 18 Mar 1858, godparents Michael Hurley and Mary Hurley
Patrick bap. 16 Apr 1862, godparents Patrick Hurley and Ellen Sullivan

Mary Hurley was probably a sister, married to Jeremiah Driscoll before 1839. Daniel Hurley, an assumed brother, married Honora McCarthy in 1850. Michael, another assumed brother, married Bridget Cahalane in 1838.

Eugene Sweeney was a godfather to a relative, Kate Hurley of Coolnagarrane, on September 30, 1878.

Ellen Hurley Sweeney died October 11, 1879 in Kilnaclasha, a widow. Patrick Sweeney, the informant, was presumably the youngest son.

One of the problems with researching this family is that there was a doppelganger family in Letter (Clooncugger), and it is easy to get the two families mixed up since they resemble each other so closely.

Eugene's doppelganger married a Catherine Regan in 1883. There is a record of Eugene Sweeney, deceased father John, marrying Mary Duggan in 1886.

After that, the Sweeney trail goes ice cold.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-26205303308695664482017-12-28T10:19:00.000-08:002019-04-13T20:28:55.701-07:00Thomas Sullivan and Catherine Coakley of MyrossThomas Sullivan certainly looks like a son of Daniel Sullivan and Margaret Keohane. Thomas died 19 Apr 1918, aged 84. That puts his birth year back to about 1834, predating the availability of Castlehaven & Myross baptism records. From a civil registration record, we know that Thomas, and Catherine Coakley, married 20 Feb 1873. He was from Myross, she was from Maulatanvally in Ross. His father was Daniel.

Their known children:

Mary bap 17 Jun 1875 godparents Daniel Sullivan, Ann Coakley

Jeremiah bap 11 Feb 1877 godparents William Sullivan, Mary Hill, birth 11 Feb, Bridget Collins Myross P.A.B.

Margaret (written Mary) bap 01 Sep 1879 godparents __ Coakley, Ann Barry, birth 10 Sep, Johanna Driscoll Myross P.A.B.

Michael 16 May 1881, Mary Driscoll P.A.B.

James 20 Jun 1885, Bridget Collins Myross P.A.B.

Thomas 28 May 1887

Notice Ann Barry the godmother in 1879. She was probably the Ann Sullivan mentioned in the prior post. If I am correct she was a younger sister of Thomas Sullivan.

The Johanna Collins Donovan of Ardagh, mentioned here, was a daughter of Larr Collins of Adrigool. Among her brothers were Jeremiah and John and among her sisters was a Catherine Sullivan, who married another Daniel Sullivan and lived in Laherdane.

A man named Tom or Thomas Sullivan was a godfather for Laurence Collins of Adrigool baptized 13 Sep 1857 in Skibbereen; Nancy Sullivan of Laherdane baptized 30 Sep 1860 in Castlehaven & Myross; and John Collins of Adrigool baptized 29 Dec 1864 in Skibbereen. They were all grandchildren of Larr (d. 1867 in Adrigool).

It certainly looks as if the Collinses of Adrigool had Sullivan relatives from Myross, but the exact nature of the relationship remains unclear.
Among them were 1. Mrs. Pat Nyhane of Rosscarbery; 2. Miss Eileen Barry Rosscarbery; 3. Miss Frances Barry of Dungannon; 4. Edmond Barry of Dungannon; and 5. Miss Maggie Daly of Froe. There were numerous others mentioned, but I'll focus on these.

1. Mrs. Pat Nyhane was Agnes Barry. She was the daughter of James Barry and Eliza Sullivan. James and Eliza married 30 Jan 1877 at Union Hall. Witnesses were Ann Coakley or Courtney, and James Barry. His father was John, her father was Daniel. Eliza's age was written as 23, which would have placed her birth year around 1853.

The godmother of the first child, John, was Margaret Keohane.

Agnes was probably the fourth child, born about 1883. She married Patrick Nyhane 28 Oct 1913.

2. Eileen, or Ellen Barry, was a sister of Agnes. She was born 01 Dec 1902. Agnes, Aileen, and their mother Eliza were in The Square, Rosscarbery in the 1911 census.

James, this Barry family patriarch, died 14 Jun 1903. Eliza died 07 Jan 1939. She was 93 years old, placing her birth year about 1845.

3. Frances Barry of Dungannon was the daughter of John Barry and Ann Sullivan. John and Ann married at Union Hall on 31 May 1870. Witnesses were Edward Barry and Elizabeth Sullivan. His father was John, her father was Daniel. John and Ann and their family lived in Benduff. Margaret Keohane was the godmother to the second child Kate, baptized 28 Jun 1872. Frances was born about 1887.

4. Edmond Barry of Dungannon was a brother of Frances. He went to live in Dungannon, with their uncle David's family.

5. Maggie Daly of Froe was the daughter of James Daly and Mary Barry. James and Mary married in the 1890's. I cannot find their marriage record. Mary was probably the daughter of John and Ann. The daughter of James and Eliza named Mary would have been too young to have married James Daly at that time.

The Barrys mentioned here may have been descended from John Barry and Mary McCarthy of Dungannon. A search of online records of Kilmacabea & Kilfaughnabeg reveal a family that appears to fit, though I cannot find a son James. For completeness, here they are:
1849 Mar 11 Catherine godparents Pat Donovan, Mary Donovan
1852 Mar 31 Honora godparents Denis Mahony, Joan Donovan

I've researched John, David, Edmond, and Honora and have a little info on Ellen. But the only Barry descendants mentioned in the obituary were descended from John and a James, and a baptism for James cannot be found in the Dungannon family. These two men married two Sullivan women who appear to have been sisters. So it is not clear if the relationship between Johanna Collins Donovan was with the ancestral Barrys or with the Sullivans.

Daniel Sullivan and Margaret Keohane lived in Myross. There is no known surviving marriage record. Their known children, in the Castlehaven & Myross records, were:

1842 Dec 29 James godparents Thomas Sullivan, Margaret Hegarty
1844 Sep 22 Anne godparents Michael Sullivan, Margaret Power
1846 Oct 09 Owen godparents Jeremiah Donovan, Catherine Sullivan
1852 Jun Daniel godparents Bath Carthy (Bartholomew McCarthy?), Margaret __
1855 Sep 27 William godparents Michael Sullivan, Mary Kelly

Daniel and Margaret may have been the godparents of Patrick Sweeney, 30 Sep 1871.
A baptism record for Eliza is missing but as previously mentioned, other records estimate her birth around 1845 or 1853.

Baptism records for a John Sullivan in Bantry in 1833 and for a Thomas Sullivan in Kinsale in 1823 look like red herrings.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0Myross, Co. He was a dairyman according to that year's census.

Was this Daniel related to my ancestral Hurleys in Coolnagarrane? While I don't have a definitive answer, at least I was able to compile some data on the family. Nellie was a complete unknown.

The census shows a daughter Mary (Mary Ellen), aged 28, along with a niece also named Mary Hurley, aged 25. So here was an opportunity to link this family to another family.

Daniel and Nellie were not in Coolnagarrane in the 1911 census. So they either moved or they died. I found a death record for Daniel on 18 Feb 1910. He was 85 years old, a widower, and living on Mardyke Street in Skibbereen. His married daughter Ellen Leary was present at death.

Nellie's death was recorded as 03 Nov 1906, on North Street, which runs straight into Coolnagarrane. She was 68 years old, a dairy man's wife. The occupation sounded right. However, the age seemed a little young according to the subsequent records I found. In the 1901 census she was supposedly 67.

Further research turned up daughter Ellen's marriage record. She wed Denis Leary, a coachman residing in Bunalun, 11 Feb 1893. Further research found Ellen Leary widowed on Mardyke Street in the 1911 census. She was 50 years old according to that census. Now it was time to find an Ellen Hurley, born about 1861. I started with daughter Ellen rather than Mary, thinking an Ellen might be easier to find.

My prior research of dairymen revealed that they moved around a bit, and Daniel Hurley was no exception. These records turned up. The family lived in Derrylugga, Milleenahorna, and Cullenagh, and ended up in Coolnagarrane.

1852 Oct 29 John godparents James Gallagher, Johanna McCarthy Derrylugga

1858 Apr 11 Michael godparents Thomas Donovan, Honora Hurley Derrylugga

1860 Jul 30 Ellen godparents Denis Sullivan, Mary Driscoll Milleennahorna

1860 Jul 30 Susan godparents Morty Mahony, Margaret Collins Milleennahorna

1864 May 22 Charles godparents Patrick Driscoll, Anne Regan Cullenagh (Castlehaven)

1866 Aug 14 Mary godparents Timothy Donovan, Kate Sullivan Cullenagh

The marriage has not turned up in the church records.

A possible related family that would have accounted for Daniel's niece Mary in the 1901 census, was that of John Hurley and Ellen Donovan, located in Derrylugga:

1872 Oct 29 Daniel godparents Daniel Donovan, Ellen Brien

1874 Aug 2 Mary godparents Daniel Hurley, Ellen Donovan

1875 Nov 2 Ellen godparents James Gallagher, Mary Donovan

1877 Mar 29 Michael godparents Michael Hurley, Kate Brien

1878 Oct 20 Honora godparents Dan Hurley, Ellen Hurley

The 1901 census shows additional children:

Kate Ann born about 1883

Maggie born about 1885

Julia born about 1888

The 1901 Ireland census for Derrylugga states John's age as 47 and the 1911 census states it as 58. That census indicates that 9 children were born to the Derrylugga family and I've only found 8.

Ellen was several years older in each census. John would have been quite young at the time of the 1871 marriage.

A marriage record for John Hurley and Ellen Donovan cannot be found in the online church records. However there may be a marriage in civil registration: Marriage record Matching marriage record

The marriage record will give the name of John's father.

The Godfather of John (1852), son of Daniel Hurley and Ellen Brien, was James Gallagher. It is interesting that James Gallagher was the Godfather of Ellen (1875), daughter of John Hurley and Ellen Donovan. If John married to Ellen Donovan was Daniel Hurley's and Ellen Brien's son, then the "niece" in the 1901 Coolnagarrane record for Daniel Hurley and Nellie Brien could have been a granddaughter. Unless there was another brother of Daniel's who had a daughter Mary.

Are there any other possible local Hurley families who could have accounted for niece Mary Hurley, aged 25 in 1901? Do I have to rethink the Daniel Hurley, married to Honora McCarthy, as the uncle of my great-grandmother Ellen Hurley and her sister Mary, born 1876? That Mary is not listed with her family in 1901.

Great-grandmother's sister Mary was around in 1904 to witness a marriage, then went to England and married there. Some further research would be to look for marriage records for Mary Hurleys in the 1900's and 1910's.

So I think the family of Daniel and Nellie is constructed, and perhaps even the family of Daniel's son John. What is still unknown is if they were related to the families of Michael Hurley and Bridget Cahalane, and Daniel Hurley and Honora McCarthy of Coolnagarrane.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-9549231803346786412016-01-17T14:09:00.000-08:002017-08-31T20:55:57.255-07:00Michael Mahony of Toughbaun, DrinaghThere's nothing like a good news clipping to push the genealogy research in a different, hopefully more constructive direction. Such is the case of Michael Mahony of Toughbawn. The Southern Star published a death notice of "centenarian" Michael Mahony of Toughbawn, Drinagh, on February 10, 1940.

The sources in the prior post, plus the funeral announcement, helped put together this information:

Married Ann (Mary?) Sullivan 24 Feb 1870 in Kilmacabea & Kilfaughnabeg R.C. Parish. Michael's father's name was recorded as Michael.
1871 Honora
1872 Michael John (M.J.), went to Kilorglin, Co Kerry
1874 James
1876 Daniel
1878 Stephen
1880 Mary Ann
A son Timothy went to Manchester.

Michael the centenarian was from Buddrimeen, Ballineen and was one of six boys. They were among the Mahony branch of the Cain O'Mahonys. If there is a death record in civil registration, it is puzzling. The entry for a 98 year old Michael O'Mahony in the Skibbereen district is dated Q1 1939. Why are the death record and the funeral announcement a year apart?

There is a Michael Mahony, son of a Michael Mahony and Anne Hennessy of Buddrimeen, baptized in Dunmanway on or after Feb 6, 1842.

The problem is - it's very difficult trying to find five brothers. There are other records with a matriarch Honora Hennessy. Perhaps Ann was her nickname. Or, perhaps Honora died and Michael the patriarch married Ann.

The earlier family with Honora Hennessy was:

1836 Sep 14 Michael

1838 Jun 29 Peter

1840 Apr 07 Timothy

Then a Jeremiah Mahony was baptized 11 Feb 1846, son of a Nancy Crowley. Another son to Nancy Crowley, James, was baptized 23 Jun 1850.

Even if Ann/Honora Hennessy died after 1842 and Nancy Crowley was a second wife, a reasonable assumption is that 1836 Michael died during childhood, hence Michael in 1842. That still leaves one more brother to account for.

Neither the Toughbaun family nor the Buddrimeen family have a member named Cain (Kean) as far as I know.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0Toughbaun, Co.
Patrick and Catherine both came from Collins families outside Drimoleague, one of the *many* Collins families I am investigating in the area.

I think Catherine was the daughter of Michael Collins and Mary Donovan of Lower Lissane. The 1911 census says she was 78, which would fit with an 1833 birth year. (Her age seems way off in the 1901 census.)

In a prior post I "assigned" a Catherine Collins, born 1820 in Lissane, to a Donovan family in Lissalohorig. Now I am assigning another Catherine Collins, born 1833, to this Bawnnahow family. Their fertility windows are being taken into account, with an assumption that women stopped having babies somewhere between 45 and 50. Beyond 50 is starting to push the limit.

There was a 13 year span for the births of the Lissalohirig children: 1852 - 1865.

There was a 15 year span for the Bawnnahow family: 1860 - 1875. It is considerably more difficult fitting 1820 Catherine in this scenario, having nine children between the ages of 40 and 55. 1833 Catherine is a much better candidate.

Anyway...

Patrick's original family is a bit harder to pin down, but since this family lived in Bawnnahow South that's where I have started to look. The godparents of Pat's and Catherine's second child Mary (1861), were Simon Collins and Johanna Driscoll. Simon and Johanna had a son Patrick baptized in 1834. Patrick's and Catherine's first child, Johanna (1860), could have been named after Johanna Driscoll. But they didn't have a known son named Simon. So maybe Simon Collins and Johanna Driscoll were a related family.

There was another family, Patrick Collins and Mary Cadogan, who also had a son Patrick in 1834. Since Patrick's and Catherine's first son was Patrick, this appears to be a better fit. But if Patrick and Catherine both had mothers named Mary, it doesn't explain how their first child was named Johanna. If these are the correct families for Patrick and Catherine, there must have been another reason for how Johanna came to be named.

The Bawnnahow children were: Johanna (1860), Mary (1861), Catherine (1862), Patrick (1867), James (1868), Honora (1871), John (1873), Patrick again (1874), and Humphrey (1875). I will have to verify the two Patricks when I have a chance to look at the civil registration records.

The witnesses to the church events of the Bawnnahow family were: Michael Collins (her father?) and Catherine Collins; William Harnedy and Ellen Neill; Simon Collins and Johanna Driscoll; James Collins and Mary Collins; Pat Donovan and Honora Collins; James Collins and Ellen Hurley; Patrick Donovan and Johanna Mahony; John Sullivan and Hannah Collins; William Harnedy and Eliza Hourihan; and Daniel Harnedy and Honora Sullivan. (Notice there are no Cadogan witnesses.)

A sticking point is the presence of son Humphrey in 1875 (who, incidentally, is grossly mistranscribed as "Helen" in the online church records). If I have found the correct Catherine as the mother, she had an older brother (a rather mysterious character) and probably an uncle named Humphrey (deceased by the the time his grand-nephew was born), and so her son could have been their namesake. Why didn't Patrick and Catherine use the name Michael, after her father, prior to using the name Humphrey ? Maybe they thought there were too many Michaels running around - but Humphrey would stand out.

Humphrey became a priest and taught at Niagara University in the United States. He died during the flu epidemic in 1919.

Son James married one Mary McCarthy before 1901. The family is in both Ireland censuses. Son Humphrey (1910) became a local Drimoleague creamery manager, married Ellen McCarthy, and died in 1975.

The Family Search ID of Catherine Collins is KCDY-BC8. She and her original Lissane family are in Family Search Family Tree. No family data for Patrick Collins has been entered yet as his family is still being researched.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com6Bawnnahow South, Co. Catherine Collins married Denis Donovan 01 Mar 1851 in Caheragh R.C. Parish. Her residence recorded on that marriage record was Lower Lissane. Witnesses to the wedding were Humphrey Collins and Honora Collins.

Catherine was probably the daughter of (and first child of) Humphrey Collins (1785 - 1873) and Johanna Barnane (BD dates unknown), baptized 02 Dec 1820. On Catherine's baptism record, I think the father's and godfather's names were transposed.

Another possible wedding witness named Humphrey could have been Catherine's cousin or close relative, Humphrey Collins bap. 01-Aug-1831. Honora could have been Catherine's sister, Honora (Norry), bap. 17-Dec-1829.

The known children of Denis and Catherine were all baptized in Skibbereen R.C. parish. They were:

Julia, bap. 20 Dec 1851. Godparents Daniel Donovan and Honora Collins.

Mary, bap. 05 Dec 1852. Godparents John Donovan and Johanna Collins. Johanna could have been Catherine's younger sister, bap. 07-Dec-1835.

Johanna, bap. 27 Nov 1853. Godparents Daniel Regan, Johanna Cadigan.

Honora, bap. 11 Oct 1855. Godparents Mick Collins, Catherine Collins.

Cornelius, bap. 11 Nov 1859. godparents Dan Donovan, Catherine Bohane.

Ellen, bap. 23 Apr 1864. godparents Daniel Donovan, Margaret Coakley. Coakley is a very Lissane name.

Catherine, bap. 25-Jun-1865. godparents Patrick Regan, Norry Cady (Keady).
Notably, his wife Susanna Fuller showed up as a godparent of one of McCarthy Knuck children. There were lots of men named Derby Connolly in Drinagh around that time, but for this particular Derby, his wife Susanna helped him stand out.

Derby and Susanna had a relatively colorful history, when all you have to view them by is ordinary church records. There is a marriage record 26-Jan-1828 in Drimoleague & Drinagh R.C. Parish. The record says they eloped 12 months earlier! Las Vegas wasn't exactly near by, so I wonder where they went.

The first child, transcribed as "Patrick", was baptized 24-Feb-1828. The baptism record is difficult to read and I question whether the child was really a "Patrick."

Yes, I could see where Derby and Susanna had some explaining to do to the local priest when they asked about getting their marriage on the books a month before the birth of their first child.

Susanna was received into the Catholic Church 11-Oct-1829, with only Connollys as witnesses. The surname Fuller shows up in Church of Ireland records, so perhaps there is an original baptism for her lurking there, and perhaps even the original marriage record for her and Derby.

Two more Connolly children have been found: Mary, baptized 20-Sep-1830, and Mick, baptized 10-Mar-1833. After that, this Susanna Fuller disappeared. Searching for her was a challenge - in one instance her surname was recorded as "Tuller" - in another case her first name was "Suan."

These Connolly and McCarthy families are recorded mostly in Garryglass, but some residences are recorded as Curraghalicky, right next door.

A Patrick Connolly does show up as a godfather later to a child of Charles McCarthy (1826 - ?) of Garryglass. If Patrick Connolly was "real", he would have been Charles McCarthy's cousin.

Not a single Fuller ever showed up on a Connolly church event. It certainly makes me wonder if Susanna severed ties with her Fuller family when she eloped with Derby.

In my quest to find out more about my Connollys in Drinagh, I did discover that some Connollys went by "Gackney" (or a spelling variation thereof), and others went by "Brack."

Margaret Mary Collins O'Brien (1923 - 2015)My aunt passed away on February 19, 2015. She was 91 years old.

I think of Aunt Peg as "Miss Skibbereen." Her memory was sharp and clear to the end. She had so many stories to tell - of her brother Humpsey as a baby, sitting in the dirt by the gate in Derryduff; of Grandmom taking her to Cullomane East, on one of those visits playing with Roggie and Pitchie, on another visit entering her dying grandfather's room; of Granddad pedaling off on his bike to the creamery, rain or shine; of visiting the creamery and getting candy from Abie Jagoe, Granddad's boss; of skipping school to play hooky at Mary Maher's house; of dressing up to visit relatives in Carrigbaun and Adrigole; of sewing dresses with my mother late at night, laughing and giggling, until Grandmom yelled at them to go to bed; of wearing those dresses on Easter Sunday, looking like a million bucks; of a visit to Kenmare for a day at the races with distant cousins; of being a checkout clerk in a grocery store in Toronto; of moving with her family to Connecticut and living near Uncle Dan and Aunt Bea.

Without Aunt Peg there would have been no genealogy endeavor in my family. My one wish is to get it all down on paper.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-89645753554424954072014-12-13T15:07:00.000-08:002014-12-13T15:07:15.091-08:00Y-DNA test scholarships for Hourihane, Hor(ri)gan, Han(d)rahan, and HoranI administer a DNA project that includes the names Hourihane, Hor(ri)gan, Han(d)rahan, Horan, and their many variations!

In conjunction with a DNA test sale ongoing at FTDNA through December 31, 2014, the project is offering scholarships for men with a qualifying surname, IF they can prove direct paternal ancestry from certain counties in Ireland.

Any man with one of these surnames who can prove Cork born direct paternal ancestry could be eligible for 100% funding of a 37 marker Y-DNA test. That is $129 + cost to mail the kit to you.

If you are a man who qualifies with one of these surnames (or a variant) but can show that your direct paternal ancestor with one of these surnames was born in Clare, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Tipperary, or Waterford, the project will fund 50% of your Y37 test ($65 after your contribution + cost to mail the kit to you.)

Name changes upon emigration are very common and don't disqualify you. You just need to show that your name changed.

The details of this couple are in a previous posting. A summary of the family is here:
Godparents: Humphrey Collins, Mary Donovan

There was also a son John in the 1901 census, age 14, placing his birth around 1886. By 1911 both parents are shown gone (James died in 1907), and son Michael subsequently married one Maria Driscoll and had children.

According to his death record, in 1907, James was 67, putting his birth year about 1840. In the 1901 census he was 63, possibly pushing his birth year back to 1838. The oldest son of James and Catherine was named Michael, and the known remaining sons were named Patrick (born around St. Patrick's Day), Denis, and John. No known son was named Humphrey.

Among their family's event witnesses were Humphrey Collins and Laurence Hourihane, names that are nearly unique to the area around Lower Lissane.

I tried to place James either in the family of Humphrey Collins and Johanna Barnane, or in the family of Michael Collins and Mary Donovan. Based on the evidence, neither are a good fit.

In the Lissane family of Humphrey and Johanna, son James was born 1833. In the Lissane family of Michael Collins and Mary Donovan, son James was born 1829. From a naming tradition view, James of Russagh would have fit better with Michael Collins and Mary Donovan, but the age is nearly a decade off. From an age standpoint, he would have fit better with Humphrey Collins and Johanna Barnane, but no son was named Humphrey.

I have found two possible babies named James, both from Baunnahow, a location that is emerging as a place of great importance in my research.

1. James, son of Michael Collins and Ellen McCarthy, was baptized 30-Dec-1838. His godparents were Jerry Kedagon (Cadogan) and Nelly McCarthy. I cannot find any other children for this couple, who were married in Drimoleague & Drinagh RC Parish 5-Feb-1837. Witnesses were Simon Collins and Jeremiah McCarthy.

This one is my preferred working model for now, for several reasons - the age fits, the name of the father fits in that the first son was named after his paternal grandfather, and both the names Michael Collins and Ellen McCarthy show up as godparents to the Russagh Collins children.

What isn't explained is why there aren't more children for Michael Collins and Ellen McCarthy. Also, those two names - Michael Collins, Ellen McCarthy - could easily have been plucked from elsewhere to fill in as godparents.

It is tempting to think the name "Jerry Cadogan" would qualify as a possible future father-in-law to James. However, searching for Jerry Cadogan in the Drimoleague records does not turn up a daughter Catherine in the right age range, or son Michael (my theory being that Michael Driscoll Cadogan of Currabeg was her sibling).

2. James, son of Simon Collins and Johanna Driscoll, was baptized 5-Jul-1840. Godparents were Bat (Bartholomew) Collins and Joan Driscoll. There isn't anything particularly remarkable about this family, except that they had a daughter Norry, bap. 18-Jun-1837, who is a contender for the Honora Collins who married James Collins and lived in Lower Lissane. I'm still working on her.

I would prefer to think that James, son of Michael Collins and Mary Donovan, married Honora Collins and stayed put in Lower Lissane because it is simpler. The marriage took place 24-Jan-1861 in Drimoleague & Drinagh and the marriage record notes James was from Caheragh parish. I believe my grandfather's family had ties to this family.

A move from Baunahow to Russagh is a complication, however from the church record evidence the family in Russagh knew people from the Lower Lissane area, so there was a move.

I am very interested in finding descendants of this family.
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-36385861547604893312014-09-13T13:16:00.000-07:002014-09-13T13:34:56.038-07:00Accidental breakthrough on Roggie and PitchieFour years ago I wrote about my (now 91 year old) aunt remembering playing with two children at her grandfather's home in Cullomane East. They were her size, and they were nicknamed "Roggie" and "Pitchie." She only remembered that "Roggie" had bright red curly hair but really couldn't remember further details. They were associated with a woman named Dinah, whom I deduced was their mother. From research I subsequently learned that "Dinah" must have been Dinah Collins Hallahan, who was my grandmother's first cousin. Both Dinah's father and her husband worked for the railroad. By pure accidental luck, I have come one major step closer to discovering what happened to Dinah, and who Roggie and Pitchie were.

Some time ago the Irish government put a civil registration index online at irishgenealogy.ie. The government took it down when it decided that publication of the records was violating privacy laws because of the availability of more recent records containing data that included mothers' maiden names. At the time I am writing this, it is still down.

Before the site came down, I looked up Dinah Hallahan and immediately found a death entry in 1980. The registration district was Cork. Figuring that the family lived in Cork City, I tried searching for Hallahan children whose mother's surname was Collins. I immediately found two children. I sent for one of those records.

The records I subsequently sent for shows that Dinah was 87 years old when she died, and lived on Glencoo Lawn off of Boreenmanna Road in Cork City. She died at a medical institution called St. Mary's.

Daughter Margaret was born in March 1920 at 29 South Terrace. The record shows the residence of the father, Daniel, at 25 High Street, which is just a few blocks away.

The second child, son Daniel, was born in 1921 according to the Irish government online source. However, I cannot find Daniel in the online civil registration at Family Search, indicating that not all information was given to the FHL at the time they filmed civil registration. Daniel's birth record will be in my next batch of GRO requests to Ireland.

Now, if I could only trace these children, particularly Margaret ("Pitchie"). If she had daughters, and they had daughters, conceivably it would be possible for one of these direct line female descendants to do a DNA test which would establish the mitochondrial signature of my 3g-grandmother, Catherine Hurley, married to Denis Mahony.

Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-8928856492492846442014-07-23T13:55:00.000-07:002014-07-23T14:00:34.572-07:00Yet another seismic shift in the DriscollsAfter a lot of research, I discovered that Pat Driscoll (bap. 1820), the person I believe is my gg-grandmother's older brother, preceded his brothers Florence and James out to Androscoggin County, Maine, USA.

There is some convincing evidence in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lewiston, Maine, that the Pat Driscoll who married Catherine Sullivan in 1841 and had a son Daniel late that year traveled to Maine around 1848. I still hold a few doubts given how young Pat was when he and Catherine Sullivan married (not quite 21).

The Pat Driscoll who married Mary Regan back in Ireland, and, for that matter, the Pat Driscoll who stood in as a witness to other family events in Ireland after 1848, could have been another close relative.

What hasn't been convincingly proven yet is which Pat Driscoll is the brother and which Pat Driscoll is the "other close relative."

There are many Maine birth and baptism records still sitting on film here at the Salt Lake City Family History Library that haven't been digitized and published online, so I will be spending many weeks sifting through those. Although what is available online is somewhat incomplete, the old Lewiston newspapers are in the Google news archive, and I can use information from there and the Mount Hope Cemetery records along with the films to reconstruct Driscoll families in the area. So far I have not been able to find death notices for Pat (d. 1882), Florence (d. 1906), or James (d. 1911).

I have never been able to determine what happened to brother Daniel (bap. 1829), and have been unable to find a death record for Daniel Senior, though I know from the youngest brother John's second marriage record that Daniel Senior was deceased by 1883.
If he wasn't pulling the leg of the loan officer to whom he made that statement in 1853, he would have been about 20 when he settled there. So far, I have been unable to conclusively link him to other Collins lines, though I do have a fishing line out there dangling (in the form of a Y-DNA test) and it could be a matter of waiting until enough Collinses with ancestry from west Cork step up to the plate (for such a common surname, the project has very few participants overall let alone participants with known Cork or Ireland ancestry).

Larr was by no means the only Collins around during the 1825 Tithe Applotment of Castlehaven parish. Also in Adrigole, which is the extreme north end of the parish, were Jerry (on the same lot), John, and Daniel. Unless his death record is grossly wrong and he was much older when he died, this Daniel was not my gg-grandfather Daniel, whom we think was born in 1814. So the questions are, did Larr have a brother Jeremiah, a brother Daniel, a brother John?

If it is the same Laurence in neighboring Coornishal during the 1829 Kilmacabea TA, there were a John and a Timothy Collins there also. The same surname and the close proximity to each other do not necessarily mean they were relatives, of course.

Later during Griffiths Valuation, there were a Timothy and a Patrick on Adrigole lots 2a and 3a while Laurence occupied 7b and 8a. I suspect it was this Patrick on the 1849 baptism record of Laurence Collins, my great-granduncle. Was Patrick this child's uncle? And what happened to Patrick, who disappeared after Griffiths Valuation?

Such is research - it leads to more questions than answers.

I have been aware of the presence of Collinses in Rearahinagh almost since I've started my research. Rearahinagh is a townland that does double duty between the parishes of Caheragh and of Drimoleague. I have had this Rearahinagh clue in my hand for a while, and today I may have finally added some substance to it.

There is a baptism record of a Laurence Collins in Drimoleague & Drinagh RC Parish. The parents - Darby Collins and Margaret Neill, resided in Killaveenoge, part of the parish of Drinagh. The baptism record is here:

10-Jul-1825 Laurence, Killaveenoge

Searching for other children of Darby (Jeremiah) Collins and Margaret Neill yields 0 results. However, there may be a clue in the Drinagh Tithe Applotment of 1833.

Looking in the TA under "Keelovinoge" there is nobody named Collins, and there is no Jeremiah or Darby Collins anywhere in the parish; however, there is a listing for a Darby Shinough Neill right there in Killaveenoge. The name Shinnick is a common name around the Dunmanway area. Could Shinnick have been an agnomen for O'Neill in these parts?

Repeating my search for children of Darby or Jeremiah Collins, only this time indicating the mother as Margaret Shin* Neil, yields the following additional results. Note that the record above, for Laurence in 1825, is the only baptism record in which the mother Margaret is recorded as Neil:

In Dunmanway RC Parish:

30-Sep-1821 Michael, Derrynacaheragh

1-Feb-1824 Daniel, Lacka, godparents Jeremiah McCarthy, Catherine Collins

20-Aug-1826 James, Coom, godparents Pat Leary, Honora Collins

Now comes a possible Rearahinagh connection.

13-Jan-1832 John Collins, Rearahinagh, Caheragh RC parish
parents Timothy Collins and Margaret Roe (Donovan?),
Godparents were Jeremiah Collins and Margaret Neil

Then back to Dunmanway:

6-Jan-1835 Dennis, Inchanadreen, Dunmanway RC Parish,

I am unable to find any marriage records for a Jeremiah Collins and a Margaret Neil or Shinnick in what is available online.

Where are these locations? Coom, Derrynacaharagh, and Inchanadreen are in Fanlobbus parish. Lacka was probably Lacka Wood, a woodland in Coom. These locations lie sharply northwest of the town of Dunmanway, encircling a lake at a location called Rockmount.

What do the tithe applotments tell me?

The Michael listed in Coom certainly could have been the one born in 1821. However, I have not found a John or Timothy up around Coom, born to this couple.

If I am wrong and the couple in Dunmanway and the couple in Drimoleague were two different couples, there is still a good chance that the Drimoleague couple whose son Laurence was baptized in 1825 were the godparents of a Collins child baptized 1832 in Rearahinagh, adjacent to Adrigole.

So far there is no conflicting data showing these MUST have been two separate couples. If I am correct that this is the same couple in all these records, they were apparently laborers and moved around where the work was. Maybe their time around Dunmanway is a clue to where the family originally came from. However, much more investigation needs to happen before I can make any case that the Dunmanway and Drimoleague families were the same family, much less claim that they may have been relatives of Larr. I am going to have to trace back a few families in the Adrigole area, not as easy as it sounds, since baptism records for the area from the early 1800's are so sparse. Rearahinagh is tough to research. So far, I have not seen it in the Tenure Book for Caheragh or for Drimoleague so I may have to dig elsewhere.
Skibbereen. Their oldest son, John, was my gg-grandfather. Michael and Bridget married in Kilmacabea parish, near
Leap, from which came numerous Cahalanes, and so I wonder how did Michael and Bridget meet. Is it possible the
Hurleys were also from there and moved to Coolnagarrane before 1815?

Both the Hurleys and the Cahalanes are rather mysterious to me. The information that follows is rather
speculative since Skibbereen baptism and marriage records are so scarce. I believe Michael Hurley had at least
three siblings - Mary, Daniel, and Ellen - the latter one showing up in Skibbereen church records baptized 22-Jan
-1815 in Coolnagarrane, parents John Hurley and Jane McCarthy. There may have been a fourth sibling Johanna.

Michael and Bridget married 25-May-1838 in Leap, Kilmacabea and lived in Coolnagarrane. Their known children, all
baptized in Skibbereen:
John (my gg-grandfather) 23-Feb-1839, godfather Daniel Hurley, godmother Catherine Cahalane
Patrick 2-Mar-1841, godfather John Hurley, godmother Mary Cahalane
Daniel 31-Mar-1843, godfather Dan Hurley, godmother Johanna Hurley
Ellen 21-Sep-1845, godfather Michael Cahalane
Michael 15-Jan-1849, godfather Dan Hurley, godmother Mary Hurley

Mary married Jeremiah Driscoll some time before 1839. (There are records of a same-named couple in Drimoleague
around the same time, which is a point of confusion.) Their known family, all baptized in Skibbereen:
John Driscoll 28-Jun-1839
Jeremiah Driscoll 19-Dec-1841
Mary Driscoll 3-Mar-1844, godfather John Hurley, possibly her grandfather, and godmother Bridget Cahalane
Ellen Driscoll 10-Oct-1847, godfather Michael Hurley
Nancy Driscoll bap 10-Jun-1852, godfather Daniel Hurley

Ellen married John Sweeney in 22-Feb-1846 in Skibbereen. Their family, all baptized in Skibbereen:
Eugene Sweeney 1-Mar-1847, godfather Daniel Hurley
Michael Sweeney 29-Apr-1849, godfather Michael Hurley
John Sweeney 12-Aug-1851
Daniel Sweeney 13-Aug-1854, godfather Daniel Hurley
Ellen Sweeney 18-Mar-1858, godparents Michael Hurley and Mary Hurley
Patrick Sweeney 16-Apr-1862, godfather Patrick Hurley

Daniel married Honora McCarthy of Driminidy 12-Feb-1850 and they lived in Coolnagarrane. Michael Hurley was a
witness. Their family, all baptized in Skibbereen:
Mary Hurley 5-Jan-1851
Ellen Hurley 17-Dec-1852, godfather John Hurley. She went on to marry William Young of North Street 1875.
Catherine Hurley 29-Apr-1855 She went on to marry Michael Herlihy 7-Mar-1886. Witnesses William Young and Ellen
Sweeney
Honora Hurley 13-Sep-1857, godfather Jerry Driscoll
Daniel Hurley 3-Jun-1860. He went on to marry Julia McCarthy (a distant cousin) 22-Apr-1894. Witness John Hurley.
John Hurley 6-Mar-1864, godfather Patrick Hurley

Now back to the Cahalanes. The only ones in these records are Catherine, godmother to John (1839); Mary,
godmother to Patrick (1841); and Michael, godfather to Ellen (1845).

Searching the records for additional appearances of Michael Hurley and Bridget Cahalane, I came across the
marriage record of James
Young and Ellen Cahalane, 28-Feb-1843, in Kilmacabea. A Cornelius Cahalane was a witness. Their known
children, all baptized in Drimoleague:
William Young 28-Jul-
1845, godparents Michael Hurley and Bridget Cahalane
godmother Barbara Cahalane

With further searching, I found a Cornelius Cahalane m. Anne
Kingston 28-Feb-1843 in Kilmacabea. James Young was a witness.
The family moved around. Their known children, all baptized in Kilmacabea:
1844
1860, godparents Michael Cahalane and Catherine Cahalane

In addition, I found a couple Tim Cahalane and Mary Cleary in Kilmacabea. The family lived in Ballyriree. Their
known children:
Mary 2-Jun-1838
godmother Barbara Cahalane

Finally, I found John Hurley
m. Julia Regan, possibly 19-Oct-1829 in Caheragh. They lived in Ballyriree. Known children, all baptized in
The Michael Cahalane who was godfather to Ellen Hurley (1845) may have been the one who married Honora Donovan 22-Feb-
1851 in Kilmacabea. I have corresponded with some of the descendants of this family. Their known children,
all baptized in Kilmacabea:

I have not been able to pin down the baptism godmothers Catherine Cahalane or Mary Cahalane yet. Anyway, here are
the Cahalanes I have found, who could be closely related:
Bridget Cahalane m. Michael Hurley
Ellen Cahalane m. James Young
Cornelius Cahalane m. Anne Kingston
Tim Cahalane m. Mary Cleary
Michael Cahalane m. Honora Donovan

In addition, Barbara Cahalane, Mary Cahalane, and Catherine Cahalane

Could John Hurley m. Julia Regan of Ballyriree have been a relative of the Hurleys in Coolnagarrane? And can
anybody shed any light on these Cahalanes?
Skibbgirl
sb10http://www.blogger.com/profile/01391069316427376726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307640823473103973.post-31734247265998751922013-07-01T20:34:00.000-07:002013-09-22T22:38:00.096-07:00Fanny Collins and Denis Crowley of CastlehavenI think I have found another daughter of Larr Collins (1783-1867) of Adrigole, though I have substantially less confidence in this child than I have in the others. The records of Fanny Collins (1829-a. 1901) aren't tightly coupled to her siblings like the records of her siblings are to each other.

"Fanny" is an old variant of Francesca no longer in use. Fanny Collins married Denis Crowley 5-Feb-1854 in Skibbereen R.C. parish; there were neither Collins nor Crowley witnesses recorded as present.

Daughter Mary was baptized 8-Feb-1855 and recorded in Adrigole; the godfather was one Daniel Collins. Whether this is the girl's uncle is not clear as my gg-grandfather Daniel Collins had relocated to Colomane East a few years prior.

Jane Crowley (8-Feb-1857) was recorded in Adrigole and had one Ellen Collins as a godmother. Jane's mother is recorded as Ann.

A second reason why I thought Fanny may have been Larr's daughter was because the Crowleys resided for a time in Adrigole. But the main reason why I thought Fanny was Larr's daughter was because Larr was the godfather of Patrick, baptized 27-Feb-1859. These are the only two pieces of evidence I have implying such a relationship.

John Crowley (9-May-1861), baptized in Castlehaven & Myross R.C. parish, is recorded in Rineen. The baptism of Kate (6-Mar-1865), also baptized in C&M parish, is recorded with mother named Johanna, which I think is an error. Michael (15-Jul-1869), C&M parish, is recorded in Gortbrack. The mother's name was mistakenly written in as William Brown, then crossed out and not rewritten.

Now comes more confusion. Jerry (11-Aug-1875) is recorded in Gortbrack. However, Ireland Births and Baptisms shows a Cornelius Crowley born about that same time to the same parents. In addition, that same data source lists a "Coomeshall Crowly" born 17-Jun-1872. I suspect that Dennis and Fanny had a child born in Coornishal, who perhaps didn't live long enough to be baptized. I will know when I see that civil registration record.

Clearly I need to trawl civil registration and perhaps the revision books to bring some clarity to this family. The 1901 Ireland census shows Fanny Crowley as a widow, age 72, living with her son John, in Farrandau. Though their son John is there, Fanny is not listed in 1911, and civil registration does not provide clues to her death.

A third reason why I thought Fanny, or Francesca, could be Larr's daughter is because the man's name Francis pops up as a middle name in this extended family, especially with "Denis." The discovery of Fanny has compelled me to revisit the 20-Jul-1856 Caheragh R.C. parish record of a child of Daniel Collins and Mary Mahony that is unreadable. It has been transcribed as Johanna and as Jeremiah but I think it is neither. Could it be Fannia - another form of Fanny?
